Great pick up!

ValKehl 08-02-2025 08:12 AM

Ryan, that is one fantastic addition to your collection - congrats!

Rhotchkiss 08-02-2025 08:58 AM

Thanks guys. I am really really excited. I can’t be the only one with a pickup so far, especially with the national happening.

Brian 08-02-2025 01:24 PM

Truly awesome ticket--congrats!

Lobo Aullando 08-02-2025 01:55 PM

I pretty much sacrificed my right knee to get these, but I'm happy.

Just kidding. I wouldn't sacrifice my knee for two cards. (I brought back a couple dozen.)

Very nice examples of two classic cards Lobo.

Ryan, it’s fun watching you put together your ticket collection with such iconic games.

Congrats to both of you.

Finally got the flip fixed on this one of a kind Ty Cobb-signed Detroit Seamless Steel Tubes postcard. Instead of simply saying "Postcard/Ty Cobb" on the flip, now it says "1907 Det. Seamless Steel Tubes/Ty Cobb/Postcard" and is graded a 9 for the autograph. Only cost me 4K and took two days to be completed for the rush price. Really enjoyed working with PSA on this one.

And here's a Betz Studio Cabinet of the 1894 Orioles team with Keeler, McGraw and Jennings amongst others. I've been after this card for years and haven't had any luck in finding one with a nice image, until two weeks ago in Hunt's auction. Somehow I turned on the live auction one lot too late and missed it. Incredibly, as I was leaving the show I spotted the very card on a table at nearly a 100% markup. The seller was kind enough to sell it to me for only a 40% markup (and I was genuinely thrilled to get it).

Pick ups today in Winston-Salem , NC

2 Attachment(s)
Working in Greensboro,NC for the last few weeks, today , I decided to see if they were any card shops in the area that had any prewar cards. The first call, a youth answered that did not even understand what “prewar” meant. After educating him, he said,” All we have is modern”……whatever that means
Not to be discouraged, I called the next shop on my list…..Score More Sports Collectibles in Winston-Salem. The young man that answered DID know what prewar meant and then said, well we have a few T206’s, so I drove the 26 miles to the shop. When I entered the shop, no one was there except the young man running the shop. I ID’d myself as the caller on T206’s and he directing me to the case where I spied at least 20 cards. My anticipation grew….While I was going through my list and pulling cards I needed , he brought out a box full of slabbed T206’s which were not priced yet. So then, I went through the box 5 at a time pulling cards I needed . I would say the box contained another 40 plus. The problem for me is that , once you past 400 in your collection, you seem to already have more of the cards than not.
BUT…..I did manage to add 12 beautifully graded cards with AMAZING eye appeal. The prices were quite reasonable and he gave me an additional discount for buying the 12. So , even though I missed the National again this year( hopefully next year), I was able to have a great afternoon of collecting. If you are looking for T206’s and are in the area……check these guys out…..I’m certainly glad I did.

So, I almost left the National empty handed. I was searching for some E98 Cobbs but couldn’t find any and figured I would not make a purchase the few days I was there. I was eating lunch around 2pm this afternoon and a dealer I follow on Instagram posted this beauty. I finished my lunch and made my way to his table.

I was fortunate enough that he was open to do mostly trade with some $$$ and we struck a deal….

An amazing card! A very strong PSA 1, congrats on the trade!

Jeff:

Unbelievable Cobb, never even knew there was a signed copy of that one. Impossible to find unsigned. Top 5 Cobb in the hobby, congrats! Also love the Betz cabinet, always one of my favorite team composites of all-time.

Congrats Jeff. That Cobby is off the charts. 4k to grade a card. I need that job.

And the other cards in this thread, just great! The Goudey Ruth batting has superb focus and coloring.
The CJ Cobby is another beautiful card as well as the rest in the thread...and after only 2 full days of the month. The passion is growing in the hobby. Love it.
Congrats everyone!

I have a few pickups I'll show later...

Awesome pickups, all.

It was another great National for sure.

I was able to pick up this humble Cobb and another one that was on my want list for quite some time.

W600 Konetchy

If a board member here bought the W600 Konetchy from Heckathorn's table I would be interested in purchasing it.

Thanks for the kind words on the Seamless Cobb and the Betz!

Thank you, Phil. Here's what Cobb wrote on the card to his former teammate, Tom Bird, of the 1905 Augusta Tourists, on October 7, 1907, the day before Game 1 of the 1907 World Series:

"Well we have won the pennant and here for world series. I led in hitting, stolen bases 60, assists, and second 100 runs & hit 355 unofficially - hope you lots of luck, will be glad to hear at any time. Royston GA., have an offer to go with all-Americans out to California. Excuse this advertising card.

I was able to arrange a deal before the national and then pick this card up at the show. This is personally a huge card for me as I was concerned if I waited much longer I would no longer be able to afford this card.

National

Walked the floor of the National all 5 days, heck of a work out! Hardly ever see these at any shows anymore. Picked up a few others but these are my two favorites.

And other great pickups...E94s, very nice CJ Cobb, a new holder for such a unique Cobb PC...

Grabbed a couple cool pickups while in Chicago. Big thank you to Mark Macrae for the very neat E98 McGraw Ghost. The Houdini was 100% an impulse buy within the first 20 minutes of arriving at the show. No regrets! :)

oldjudge 08-04-2025 03:38 PM

Jeff-that is a beautiful piece--congratulations on having it. That said, let me understand the grading process--PSA charges $4k to put a card in a holder using the same effort and materials that they would charge $25 for if the card was lower value. They've abrogated their responsibility to grade the card by saying any postal used postcard, what the card was made for, is an A. Finally, for Cobb just signing his first name they grade the signature a 9. If he had signed his full name would they have given it an 18? I have a nice 1915 Boston team card that was postal used. Rather than giving it to PSA I'll give it to CGC and save a lot of money. They may even take the effort to decide what number grade it deserves. What a crazy thought!

No regrets on letting the Red Crofts Barry find a new home as it definitely belongs in your collection.

Nice move, Scott. It has DJ's name written on it somewhere.

I got that one from a guy, about 18-20 yrs ago, in a Kroger Parking lot, late at night. I got 2 reds and a blue one for $500 total, if I recall correctly.

I believe it to be an Old Judge Proof and have never seen another one like it.

Fantastic pick-up on the Brouthers. Never seen one of those before. Congrats!
