Mantle/Berra Type 1 photos?

Anyone? Thanks

Berra stamping shows it is an original Gallo photo. No proof it is a Type 1 in my opinion.

Mantle is clearly a Gallo photo but without the stamp is it original or not. You did not show the reverse of the Mantle. I could not say. Again, no way in my opinion from these pics to determine what Type it would be classified as.

I am not a photo expert but since no photo experts have responded so far, I took a shot.

Thank you very much. The Mantle has the exact same Gallo stamp on the back also

Do all Gallo photos come with extra feet?:D

Then both are original Gallo photos in my opinion. Still not sure they are Tyoe 1’s.

The thing is theres no zip code which tells me it was developed before 1963 most likely

The Mantle photo is iconic and was used by many for autographs in later years. Gallo had an imprinted raised stamp that was placed in the lower right hand corner to signify that it was an original Gallo photo. However, those would have been Type 2 at best.

The one you have is earlier but unless printed from original negative within 2 years of the first photo, it would still be a 2.

I would send it to PSA and for $50 (more if it is deemed a Type 1 but worth it) and get Henry Yee and Marshal Fogel’s opinion.

There are photography experts who may see this and respond.

That photo as a Type 1 is extremely valuable.

Impossible to tell without seeing it in person, but the dark contrast of the ink from the stamp and the way it has pooled up in some areas is at the very least concerning and normally indicates that the stamp has been applied fairly recently. Not stating an opinion from a photo online, but just an observation.

Seems highly unlikely that some random person was able to get a hold of a pre-1963 stamp from a deceased photographer who wasn't very well known and worked in a very small town from the 1940's-to early 1970's. And I also have a Berra from the same day with the exact same stamp on the back. I would think of that was the case you would see more floating around. This came from a estate of a ex-yankees employee who was long time friends with Ray at the time. Gallo studios was a very small and not well known company that only operated in cranston a short period

Free advice is worth what you pay for it. I only urged caution. Do what you want.

All good. Was able to track down Ray Gallo's son (Louis)who still lives in Rhode Island. He was shocked I had the photos. Apparently his dad told him that that particular image was Mantle's favorite. He said those photos are no doubt 1950's originals as his dad never stamped any of his later photos with that stamp. And no one else is in possession of his stamp. He thinks Cooperstown might also have one of his originals. The later prints were embossed on the front. Appreciate the feedback but the age/discoloration of the paper, clarity of the image, along with the period correct stamp and information from his son is good enough for me.

FYI, in case you do not know he runs an auction house that exclusively sells photos and he even has his own authentication evaluation. He has probably seen more photos than almost anyone on this message board.

I agree with him, just send it in to Henry if you want the opinion. You can only do so much with a few photos on Net54.

That said, your provenance info is good to know.

Lol..I dont know who you are but you seem to be taking this post real personal. I sold the Mantle photo and decided to take it off here. So I dont know what proof youre talking about..lol. I've been collecting Type 1 photos for over 10 years and probably shouldve re-worded this thread to ask if anyone has come across Gallo's stamp. But so far no one has. You can jump to whatever conclusion you want to make up in your head. It has all the characteristics of a Type 1 and since no one has seen a Raymond Gallo stamp I went to the next best source which was his son who is in his late 60's and told me the history of his father and information on the stamp he used. If you want to assume that someone found his old stamp and decided to put it on one Berra and one Mantle photo thats ever surfaced and put the stamp in different locations on a more modern print then thats your story. Have fun with that.

I can at least read.

"Poof", the word I used means "something suddenly disappeared" as your photos did. That is a fact, not fiction.

The word "proof" was not in my post.

I simply wondered why you took the awesome pictures down.

Have a great day!
