Ken Goldin & Don West giving away T206 Wagner & more

1 Attachment(s)
Just stumbled onto this video today that features a segment from I think around '97 — heaping piles of horeshit here from Ken Goldin and Don West about inserted redemption cards into their bogus repacks for a T206 Wagner, plus many of the best vintage cards in existence. Check out all the GEMS in those old screwdown slabs

I was one of god knows how many people who'd come home tipsy, eat something, and pass out to them screaming about cards. What a time.

Professor Sports Card here wonders if ANYONE got one of these redemption cards. Were you one of the lucky ones??

Didn't a US Postal worker win the T206 Wagner?

(or am I thinking about the repacks that sold in Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc. back in the late 20th Century?)

Postal worker won the Walmart redemption in 1996. She had to sell the card to pay the taxes. I think she got about $600K for it at the time. Not bad for sending in a few redemption cards and winning the lottery.

I'm pretty sure it was the Gretzky/McNall Wagner card and is the one that was later graded PSA 8 although Mastro admitted to trimming it from a sheet.

Sold for a paltry $2.8 million the last time it traded hands if my recollection is correct.

Just an FYI

If it was the Mastro card, it had already been graded by PSA in 1991 and received an 8. It is famously (infamously??) known as the first card graded by PSA, which ALLEGEDLY knew this card had been trimmed by Mastro before grading it. PSA's Mr. Harris denies this to this day. That's how I remember the Mastro Honus Wagner story, anyway. Peace.

I remember Shop At Home used to push the Tiger Woods Grand Slam Ventures card, and one of the things Don West kept saying was that at one point it had sold for $100,000.

Is this true?

I highly doubt it ever reached anywhere near that. They seemed rare at the time ... then later it seemed about as rare as the Griffey '89 Upper Deck.

Another one they pushed was the 1985 Jordan Nike promo. Watching one of the segments on YouTube from around 2000, West was screaming crazily about it at $4,999.99 — that's $9,400 in today's dollars. You can find a good copy for around $800 now.

How does one come back from this, to become a trusted hobby expert?

They were selling for $2,000 at the time (I was dumb enough to buy one), ended up selling it for $150 at some point.

Maybe Ken can send me a check for the difference...

Some sweet TV promotion with your own show probably helps.
