1982 Topps JC Penny's Factory set
1 Attachment(s)
I purchased 2 of these sets in 1982 around xmas. I paid $15 each from a Card shop that had ordered some. It came only sealed with a single piece of tape on the bottom / side. I have followed discussions about these sets over the years and thought it was definitively established that these sets were Never issued with any sort of Factory Wrap. But I am selling one of my sets on Ebay and since I listed it 2 sets have sold for more than my asking price and both were shrink wrapped and advertised as Factory sealed.
So my question is, has any new information surfaced about these sets? Anyone here purchase their set directly from Penny's. Or owned it since new? Thanks for reading |

If this article is right then there was no shrink wrap |
I don't have any contemporaneous notes or recollections regarding this particular release. I do have an observation, though.
The two recently sold '82 Topps "sealed" sets have very different shrink wraps. One has a seam along the side. The other does not. It seems possible that at least one of those boxes *might* have been sealed after it left the Topps factory in 1982. |

Was there a picture in the catalog by chance?
But I never knew of anything being shrunk wrapped from Topps back then. Sent from my SM-S928U using Tapatalk |
Topps 1982 Factory set
Thanks for replying. I did notice the shrink wrap was inconsistent. There is another 1982 JC Penny set for sale now. When I looked at it the bottom of the box is scuffed and dirty. Under the shrink wrap, how did that happen.?
The sad part of this story is the person who purchased the set for $760 plus tax and shipping, contacted me. I told him to do a little research and that he should return the set. He said he likes the box. And fair enough it's his money he can spend it how he likes. But when bad guys get rewarded they just do more bad stuff to more people. So it is sad that these things move along. Last year when the big pokemon box scam came out..(3.5 million for a 1st edition case) everyone was shocked. To me spending $800 on a box of cards you know isn't what it is claimed to be, is the same mistake just for less. |
