BST Pick Ups

2 Attachment(s)
Some members say there isn't good stuff listed on the BST. Well, for whatever reason, I seem to have some luck there. Show a BST pick up if you would like to?
The seller of this (hey Rob) said he got it on Net54 about 15-16 yrs ago... (the size of the scans isn't perfect)

This one's not in hand yet, but the deal is consummated.

To save someone else the effort, "Lou is looking dapper in his tuxedo". :D

Snapolit1 08-28-2025 07:58 AM

Great 4.

I know baseball lingo changes over time, but always hated usage of "siege guns" on this card. Just semed like someone straining way too hard and coming up with a lousy turn of phrase.

Scanner bed isn't quite big enough, but gets most of it.
Thanks Eric!

This reminds me of the recent 1919 W514 Joe Jackson that went up and sold same evening…that (in addition to the current T206 Ty Cobb back and this Lou) are some of the best BST standouts. I don’t have data to substantiate, but feels like past year fewer grail cards show up in BST, so they go fast. I wonder if there’s a way to get more high end cards (eg $5K+) on BST?

vansaad 08-28-2025 08:21 AM

It has been a little slow. There's only one Ty Cobb back listed on the BST right now.

I orignially came to this site in June '24 to find a good deal on an N28 Glasscock, and within 5 days Dave H. hit me up with this gem. The pre-war seal was thus broken, and there was no turning back after that...

Fantastic Gehrig, Leon. Looks awesome.

Great Stuff Guys! I've had TONS of success buying/selling here and pretty much check every morning. Seems even sometimes you don't even list in B/S/T and you have guys who send extremely reasonable offers!

I saw this, and it looks fantastic! Both the card itself, and the fact that I think this is Lou's best card ever put out. Looks almost as good as mine, bought at Chanute AFB many years ago with reenlistment bonus money.

Yes they do appear in BST. This was originally in a SGC holder who took off for the Swift stamp so it went to CGC. 11 out of 18. Looking for more.

timber63401 08-28-2025 04:12 PM

I've seen hundreds of super nice cards in the BST in the last decade and thousands of nice ones.

Thanks James (and all).... and James, I would love to see yours if you can post a pic? Looking at wonderful, pre war, cards is a big pleasure.
The color on this Goudey really pops, especially compared to most others.

And, one of my fave BST pick ups from a few years back...

BillyCoxDodgers3B 08-30-2025 08:47 AM

We never determined who the old chap in the middle was, did we? I recall a thread about this.

Every time I scroll by it, my mind immediately thinks it's Cy Young, though it clearly isn't.

Very first W514 I picked up was right here on B/S/T.
I've been down this set rabbit hole ever since!

Leon, some may view this comment as ticky-tac but the BST would be a better experience if posters would actually identify their threads as to whether they are selling or buying, instead of leaving us guessing.

“WTB”, “FS”, “Looking for”, etc. all help identify a BST thread and help us know what we’re clicking on. I can’t recall how many times I’ve gone into an unknown thread only to be disappointed.

Now if a poster is too lazy to identify their thread, I’m going to be too lazy to click on it.

+1000. If your post just lists a card, and then it turns out to be a "want to buy" you are disappointing many people who click on it thinking you are selling one.

Overall, I believe the fewer rules the better. If members are too lazy to post a picture (hi Jim :)), or put a decent title up, then that's on them.

I usually keep this in the safe deposit box at the bank, but I got it and several others out recently. It's going back on Tuesday. It's my personal favorite Lou Gehrig card of them all. I got this card, Babe Ruth Goudey #144, and Babe Ruth (and Gehrig and Cobb) signed OAL 1934-39 ball all same day at Chanute Air Force Base with reenlistment bonus money. All authenticated by Harvey Brandwein.

Beautiful Gehrig, Leon! Some seller are asking well-beyond full retail, but if there are solid buys available if you're patient. Some of my best pickups have been BST purchases.

We are a smaller community here on Net54 but extremely tight. Family like which I love and admire. A lot of us know (to an extent) of what others have etc etc. I feel the BST section is fine and comes and goes in spurts to whatever it is you’re looking for. I’ve had great experiences on here.

Now, you want to talk annoying? Is what’s on the FB groups where you have the same 6 people in all the groups with the same exact listing when you are trying to find something “fresh”. I mean I get it, this is how some people make their living but give me a break. I typically scroll past these as I really don’t care what they have deal or not. I’m grateful our BST is not like the groups for this reason and others. Thank you everyone!

One of my favorite BST pickups. The 1946-47 Propagandas Montiel Los Reyes del Deporte Bob Feller. Already had the orange border version. Picked up the yellow border version on BST. Thank you again, Dan!

BRoberts 09-02-2025 07:19 PM

Those two Fellers are like 8s for that issue.

tycobb 09-02-2025 09:44 PM

I really like that postcard, Leon.

I forget about the BST because my luck has been pretty bad in terms of sales as compared to eBay and auctions; looks like I am gonna have to try it again. Thanks for the reminder.

Any chance of image hosting?

Here's some info from the back of my copy. Dick Mayes a 3/4 century team ball player holding ball from 1800s.

Exhibitman 09-03-2025 09:15 PM

That Ruth PC that uses the image from the Exhibit photo session, wow.

yanksfan09 09-03-2025 09:33 PM

Yea both Ruths I got back over 15 years ago!

The PC, I remember was in the old Lemke books as "seated in wicker chair" or something to that effect. I haven't seen another and think this is the one that was shown in the book most likely.

Just snagged this yesterday….thanks Rob! It has great color with a little caramel stain thrown in.

LEHR 09-05-2025 08:37 AM

While I haven't bought a lot from the BST, I've had good luck selling items here. I'd say 90% of what I've listed has sold, and at a fair price. I've even sold a couple pieces on buyer requested payment plans and have had zero issues.

I spent almost a thousand dollars looking into this and didn't find a good solution... I am all ears if someone has a possible fix.

And a few more from the BST...

This is probably a solution that you have already explored???

I use Flickr for all of my image hosting - I believe it will accommodate somewhere around 500ish images in the "Free" Version.

I don't think Flickr solves this or, maybe it can't be integrated with our old s/w.
The issue is uploaing large files, easily, and have them be small enough to actually upload, then enlarging them when clicked on. I spent several hours of an engineers time looking into it. Since this s/w is so old, and I have looked into it several times, I am a bit pessimistic. Still open to ideas though :)

Here is a quick AI of the summary of the Flickr and this software..

Yes, you can use Flickr with vBulletin 3.1, but it requires manually embedding the content rather than a modern, seamless integration. vBulletin 3.1 was released in 2004, long before the modern plugins and embedded services we use today, so it does not have built-in support for Flickr.

.
