Facebook and misinformation, name a more iconic duo

Lucas00 09-07-2025 01:21 PM

The way Facebook works is you get paid for people interacting with your posts. So "people" (its really 99% bots/ai with minimal human interaction) make fake headlines and stories to get those interactions. If you see a Facebook news story just automatically assume it's fake or very very misconstrued.

Stay away from them, not worth any kind of time.

judsonhamlin 09-07-2025 06:18 PM

If there’s anything the internet has taught us is that our historical ideas about the ratio of idiots to villages was wildly inaccurate.

Beercan collector 09-07-2025 07:13 PM

This morning I seen the innocent woman’s name all over YouTube, I searched it and there were a couple dozen videos claiming it was her and they’re calling for her head - I do a Google search and it’s not her but there’s still a bunch of videos saying it is (I don’t have Facebook ,Instagram, TikTok , Twitter ,HBO .. )

+1. Isn't it also the case that the most people globally get their news from social media?

I have been thinking that a good side business would be selling pitchforks, torches and nooses. I would probably not be able to keep up with the orders!

Wait' exactly how do I get in on that. I've been on fb a long time, and haven't seen any money from them.

You probably have to apply to their sponsor program and have a certain number of followers, engagements etc.

Very unfortunate for the misidentified woman, and typical of mob mentality
on social media. I'll point out that the idiots aren't limited to social media in
this case, as the behavior of both adults was absurd (the dad who invaded the
space of other fans and the woman who felt the need to act like he just stole
her kidney). People are just lovely!

P.S. And is Elizabeth Warren a Phillies fan now? I thought she was a lifelong Reds fan.

Photoshop or AI on that. Glasses are different and no two-tone hair. Trolling as trolls do.

The video shows the ball landing in the concrete below the seats in front of her row. I don't believe there is a zone of control when you buy a ticket for a seat other than that seat and where you put your feet. She never touched it and the unwritten rule on any ball in the stands is whomever grabs it, keeps it. There was no one seated in that row. He had every right to go over and take it.

Michael B-

If you don't find the guy's behavior tacky, I can't help you. He scurried like a
rat to a location he clearly didn't inhabit. His behavior was like that of a child.
There's no "law" against it, you know there is no "zone of control"- it was
just in poor taste (and obviously so), like cutting in a line. The woman's
behavior was also gross. It's wonderful microcosm of the horrible and
ridiculous behavior I see more and more among adults.

Trent King

Beercan collector 09-09-2025 06:25 AM

He wanted to get a ball for his kid - he walked down a half a row of empty seats tracking it and when it hit the ground he quickly grabbed it - at least it was on his row - The mean lady wasn’t even in that row she was up behind it .
I think it would be a lot harder for him Not to go after an easy home run ball

ClementeFanOh 09-09-2025 07:14 AM

Idiots on the internet

Eric (Beercan)- I watched the video once. Unless that video was sped up for effect, he was past walking. And the lady was no angel either- that’s the problem. The internet folks are inevitable, neither adult was proper. Just gross all around. Glad the child made out in the end. Trent King

Fair enough - walking was probably the wrong choice

Eric72 09-09-2025 04:30 PM

I've seen countless scrambles for baseballs that left the field of play. In my opinion, this father's movement towards the ball was quite civilized. He didn't appear reckless or violent in any way.

It was on the ground. He saw it. He picked it up. That should have been the end of it. Had the other fan not reacted the way she did, I don't think anyone else would have thought anything negative about the dad's behavior. On the contrary, without the other fan's reaction, it was shaping up to be a brief little feel-good moment.

Eric72 09-09-2025 04:50 PM

Side note:

Another bad thing about all of this is the fact it was a Phillies fan. Even 1,000 miles away from Citizens Bank Park, it seems like the old "700 Level at The Vet" behavior and image will persist.

As someone who has been going to Phillies games for nearly 50 years, I dislike seeing anything that reinforces that stigma. Philadelphia fans have been booing Santa Claus, punching police horses, and throwing batteries for as long as I can remember. Approximately 1 in every million Philadelphia fans...but those are the ones people remember.

Now we have another fan's behavior to deal with, and this one traveled quite some distance to bring shame to Phillies fans.

she’s out of control - poor doggy 🙁

ClementeFanOh 09-09-2025 05:28 PM

bad internet...

Hi Eric- I find we are usually on the same sheet of music, but not this time.
I watched the video again, in slow motion, and can offer these observations:

1) Most importantly, and concerning the original point of the post, the
internet witch hunt went terribly awry (shock!) and was grossly wrong.
That's awful for the improperly accused woman.

2) I've seen countless scrambles too. You are correct in that the father wasn't violent; instead, he was a sneak. This doesn't justify what he did.

3) There were actually 2 people, not one, within crouching distance of
retrieving the ball. They didn't get the chance, despite easily being closest
to it and clearly making an effort to track it. Hard to judge by video of
course, I'd say the father snuck in from 15 feet away. I mean, was he
hoping the other people had no spines, or did he actually believe his
behavior was proper? Who knows, not good either way...

4) Try this mental exercise. Imagine yourself at the grocery in an aisle. You
look down at the ground for an item on the bottom shelf, and bend
to pick it up. As you do so, you notice a $50 bill on the ground next to you.
Then you see a guy in your peripheral vision, who abandoned his cart 15
away, swoop in and grab the $50 as you are reaching for it. Said guy then
scurries back to his cart, ignoring the fact that you are still crouched
where the bill was, and apparently acting like he has all of a sudden
become invisible. Would you say something to this guy? I would...

5) You called the East Coast behavior thing- I was thinking it, you called it.
Neither party acted well, for sure. I am glad the Phillies stepped up for
the young fan.

Thanks Trent I certainly enjoy the videos you make of card shows , but .. and I’m not super invested in this - If I was in the ladies position I would’ve simply thought “damn too bad Bader didn’t hit it 10 feet farther” -
The grocery thing is completely different, I’m not needing/wanting someone else’s $50 (Believe it or not ) but your right, I certainly would’ve spoke up n said “hey fella let’s find out who’s $50 that is”

jayshum 09-09-2025 08:21 PM

The guy went past 4 or 5 empty seats to get a home run ball for his son on (or almost on) his birthday. He didn't appear to do anything crazy to get it - no obvious pushing someone out of his way or grabbing it out of someone's hands. I've seen people at games do way worse things to get a ball than this guy did.

I think the worst was when a Phillies player hit a woman with a foul ball, and as they were carrying her out on a stretcher, he hit her again. That was cold.

+1
I'm not sure how many people, I would hope a majority, upon seeing the man give the ball to a child would have just smiled, waved and walked away. That's not a battle, even if you win, that you will ever win in the court of public opinion.
Just ask the guy who snatched the signed tennis players hat away from a kid.

icurnmedic 09-09-2025 10:31 PM

I guess we all have different point of views, mine is the guy was well within his rights to gather the ball, she was out of line ,period. Otherwise you are saying no one can get a ball unless it is hit directly to you, with your rump seated, and not even sure you can reach for it.

ClementeFanOh 09-10-2025 03:53 AM

bad internet behavior

Thomas (icurnmedic)-

1) The internet rage mob were out of line for misidentifying the woman.

2) The guy was out of line. I get the distinct feeling many of the people
defending his behavior on this site, would not have been happy with him
weaseling past to grab a ball you were going to pick up, then gleefully
pretending to be invisible (and playing the victim) immediately after.

3) The woman was out of line, far too confrontational. It may well be,
however, that she too had someone who would like to own a HR ball
(a grandchild, maybe).

4) In short, bad behavior by all the adults involved. Phillies did the right
thing though. Main lesson is we live in a society that is largely graceless.

Trent King

steve B 09-10-2025 08:05 AM

I don't think the guy was out of line by much.
Make it a bit different, we've all seen home runs into the stands at poorly attended games. Some even hit into a totally empty section. There's usually a bit of a race to get to it.
So what would you have them do? Maybe utilize the hr distance measurer to determine who was closest and announce things like "guy in the green hoodie was closest, it's his ball"

Baseball is getting silly enough.

Agree about the internet detectives who are wrong this time, and the woman.

If Ashburn had that kind of bat control, I suspect he’d have won a lot more batting titles.

Richie kept in touch with that woman throughout the years. He felt horrible about what had happened.

It was always one of his favorite stories to tell during games.

slidekellyslide 09-10-2025 03:28 PM

Two things are wrong with this Phillies homer.

1) The woman who accosted the man for a ball he fairly got. Home runs are fair game, this woman had no right to the ball because it was hit near her. The man did NOTHING wrong. He ran over and snagged it off the concrete. The woman didn't have it in her hands...Not even sure how she thought she was going to grab it with a phone in her hand.

2) The internet trying to track this woman down and ruin her life. It's just a Harrison Bader home run. It's not like this was a milestone million dollar baseball.

ClementeFanOh 09-10-2025 04:55 PM

Bad internet behavior

Slidekellyslide-

1) Couldn't you apply "It's not like this was a milestone million-dollar baseball" to the man's behavior, as well? I am NOT defending the woman's outburst, I'm saying the logic goes both ways.

2) More than one commenter has mentioned the word "right" in a post on
this topic. I'm certain I haven't stated anyone has a "right" to possess a
foul ball. It's more accurate to say it's a matter of propriety. I wouldn't make
a beeline to another section of seats, casually pop in front of the folks who
were MUCH closer to the ball, snag it, then go back and make sure I didn't
look their way afterward. Would you? The guy was sneaky, period.

3) I'm not an apologist for the woman. When I watch the video I just think
it's pretty gross all the way around. The internet behavior is deplorable.
Our species doesn't come off looking good at all:(

Trent King

slidekellyslide 09-10-2025 09:44 PM

Ever been to a major league baseball game? Home run balls have been a free for all since time began. The guy you are saying was in the wrong did absolutely nothing wrong at all.

ClementeFanOh 09-11-2025 03:37 AM

bad internet

slidekellyslide-

Um, yeah... been to my share of games. Great question! The guy's behavior
was pretty crass, you wouldn't have liked it if you were on the receiving end.
As I originally pointed out, it was yet another little episode of adults behaving
poorly all around. The child displayed the best behavior during the event.

Trent King

slidekellyslide 09-11-2025 11:08 AM

I've been to many baseball games in the bleachers close to home runs, I'm not one to chase them, but I don't care at all if someone does as long as they don't climb over someone. This guy didn't touch anyone, he ran and grabbed the ball before anyone else. Thanks for telling me how I would feel though.

ClementeFanOh 09-11-2025 03:38 PM

bad behavior

slidekellyslide- And thanks for the jackass question about whether I'd ever
been to a baseball game. Trent King

Beercan collector 09-11-2025 05:58 PM

Yeah I think we can drop this trivial subject,
I was raised to respect others opinions - There are people out there with Zero coping skills that cannot accept or tolerate a differing opinion.
Days ago I realized Trent wasn’t gonna cave - he had a nearly unique opinion and stuck too it - Although I still disagree I’m proud to say I lost that debate .
