Tuesday Trivia

I was watching the Cubs/Braves game last night and saw this trivia. There have been 14 players or managers who have had their numbers retired by more than one team. And interestingly enough, there was one major name left off the list.

Who wants to guess these players/managers? No cheating, please.

Greg Maddux.

jayshum 09-11-2025 07:46 AM

Jackie Robinson.

Is Babe Ruth the major name not on the list?

Gorditadogg 09-11-2025 07:56 AM

Jackie's #42, which was retired by every team, was the name not included. Babe Ruth's #3 was retired by the Yankees only. Sorry.

Maddux's #31 was retired by the Cubs and the Braves, which I bet is how somebody got the idea to show the list during last night's game.

Randy Johnson? Sparky Anderson? Tony LaRussa?

jayshum 09-11-2025 08:17 AM

Nolan Ryan and Hank Aaron

Anderson is correct. He wore #10 with the Reds and #11 with the Tigers.

The Cards retired LaRussa's #10 but the White Sox never did. And if they were ever thinking about it they probably reconsidered after his last disastrous stint.

And you are getting ahead of yourself with Johnson. The Diamondbacks retired his #51 but the Mariners don't plan to follow suit until next year.

Yep. Hammerin' Hank's #44 has been retired by the Braves and the Brewers.

The Ryan Express's #30 was retired by the Angels and #34 by the Astros and Rangers.

I was thinking the A's on Tony LaRussa, but you're right, I was surprised to see that they didn't retire his number.

Great question!

I'll go with Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, and Casey Stengel.

You are three for three! Stengel's #37 was retired by the Yankees and Mets, the Say Hey Kid's #24 by the Giants and Mets, and FRobby's #20 by the O's, Reds and Indians/Guardians.

Only 7 to go.

Wade Boggs, Keith Hernandez, Barry Bonds?

Boggs is right. #12 by Tampa and #26 by Boston.

Even though Bonds won two MVPs for the Pirates, they haven't retired his number. Similarly, the Cardinals haven't shown their appreciation of the MVP and five Gold Gloves Mex earned with them.

Nolan Ryan?

Hernandez is in the Cardinals Hall of Fame though, so he did get some love from them.

Yep. We've got 9 so far:

Aaron
Anderson
Boggs
Maddux
Mays
F. Robinson
J. Robinson
Ryan
Stengel

6 more to go. All Hall of Famers.

How about some more Mets. Gil Hodges was the manager of the Miracles Mets team, and Gary Carter was a great player for the Mets and Expos.

Not sure if the Dodgers retired Piazza's number, but the Mets did.

Also, how about Rod Carew or Reggie Jackson?

You got three more. Hodges' #14 was retired by the Mets and Dodgers. Mr. October had #9 retired by the A's and #44 by the Yanks. And Rod Carew was a great guess. His #29 is on the wall for the Angels and the Twins.

Only 3 to go. 2 pitchers and 1 catcher.

Carlton Fisk has to be the catcher.

Is Roger Clemens one of the pitchers?

Beercan collector 09-11-2025 12:23 PM

Tom Seaver ? Mets and Reds

Beercan collector 09-11-2025 12:27 PM

Joe Torre ? Cardinals and Yankees,
Never mind he Would have to make it as a manager not a catcher

Gorditadogg 09-11-2025 12:41 PM

Seaver won 75 games over 6 years for the Reds, made 2 All Star teams and was runner up for the Cy Young in '81, but that wasn't enough for them to retire his number.

However Carlton Fisk, who caught Seaver's 300th win, did get his #72 retired by the White Sox and his #27 by the Red Sox.

<strike>I checked and Ryan has had his # retired by three teams, Angels, Rangers, Astros.</strike>

I see you had mentioned that in a prior post.

Torre had his #6 retired by the Yankees. No one has retired Clemens' jersey yet, but he's caused several of his suppliers to retire.

You are down to 2 left, both pitchers.

Yep, Ryan and Frank Robinson are the only two players that have had their numbers retired by 3 teams.

Fingers or Eckersley?

jayshum 09-11-2025 05:10 PM

Roy Halladay- Phillies and Blue Jays

bk400 09-11-2025 05:12 PM

Jesse Orosco and Dwight Gooden

bk400 09-11-2025 05:24 PM

Mike Mussina

bk400 09-11-2025 05:27 PM

What about Mariano Rivera? i assume the Yankees retired his number, and every other team has also because he wore 42.

Beercan collector 09-11-2025 06:56 PM

Gaylord Perry ?
Fergie Jenkins ?

OK. That's it, you got them all. One bonus question. There is one HOFer who had his number retired as a player, and his microphone retired as an announcer. Who is he?

Richie Ashburn? If not him then Phil Rizzuto?

Never mind, I see it now.

Those are two really good guesses. Both Hall of Famers with their jersey numbers retired. Rizzuto even had a #1 song. But neither have had their mikes retired.

Yep. Nobody on the Pirates can wear #4, and no Mets announcer can use Kiner's microphone.

Well done everyone!
