Historically significant, but best is that six HOFers played in one of the games, including Paige, Gibson, Charleston, and Bell

bcbgcbrcb 10-04-2025 01:53 AM

Great ticket, I’m sure that cost a pretty penny these days. All those guys played on the same team too (Crawfords) plus Judy Johnson. BTW that’s Crawfords owner, Gus Greenlee’s facsimile signature at the bottom of the ticket. He lured all of these megastars to Pittsburgh by offering them more money than anyone else thanks to the fortune he made running numbers rackets (gambling) in Pittsburgh. Only three years later, Dictator Trujillo did the same thing, luring Paige, Gibson and Bell to play for his Dominican Republic team, Ciudad Trujillo, that would win the Caribbean Series during the winter of 1937.

That’s a great photo, Jamie. Another one of those, better to have once owned than never to have owned at all, I guess. Wish I had that one back too.

This Rabbit arrived today from the recent Heritage auction…..really tried to hang in there on several items, but prices too high for me. But I’m happy with this , it will make a good stew!

I think George Sisler is one of the most underrated, undervalued players in the HOF today. His stats, to say the least, are impressive; a right handed first baseman who won several golden gloves, batted over .400 several times, an inductee into the 2nd class of the HOF, etc.
I know he played for the lowly Browns, but I feel he is overlooked for his contributions to the early game.
I used to have a nice Sisler collection, including an autographed rookie, but had to sell it. Wish I had it back. Sellers remorse yet again.

More October pickups arrived today, and another Cracker Jack surrounded by Leafs. Big thanks to Jeff at Gross Vintage Baseball. That lone CJ was packed well and arrived faster than even he could run the bases. And I’m loving the color of this Fall’s Leafs.

I agree with everything John says except he was left-handed, they did not award Gold (not Golden, that's boxing) Gloves during his career, he hit .400 twice, and he was elected in 1939 which was the fourth HOF class.

Sorry, I am feeling argumentative today!

Michael, it's ok to feel argumentative with the world crumbling around us. Me too, but I stand humbly corrected about my Sisler bloopers. Don't know where I got he was right handed since I have a photo of him batting lefty. Maybe I was thinking of Gil Hodges. Anyhow, glad we agree he was a great player and a good man.

This doesn't 100% fit -- not a prewar card -- but picked up a few bits of a minor league player's ephemera that are interesting

a) Win Clark signature on the APBPA membership card

b) the unconditional release telegram feels like the opposite of a rookie card -- the moment this pitcher's career really pretty much ended. Makes me wonder what other career-end artifacts could be collected. (Also I love that the telegram operator eventually just gave up on "unconditional".)

Thank you for taking it in good spirits. I would post a Sisler card if I had one. I used to have a Sisler HOF bust but no longer do. He is not in any of the sets I collect and he is too expensive for the type card collection. Much like Heilmann his career started after the E-card sets and ended before the 1930s sets, limiting his options.

And
A different back version (left side) to go with my other T216 Kotton Lajoie. I still can’t find another copy of the one on the right.

Enjoy the weekend,
Bob
