Let's see your Hank Gowdy items

Hank Gowdy is one of my favorite pre-war players. The hero of the 1914 Miracle Braves - he batted .545 in the series. He was also the first MLB player to enlist in WW1.
A really interesting career but not quite enough for the HoF. Still, he received votes for the HoF 17 times. You can read more about him at SABR https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/hank-gowdy/ I'll start with a few of my items: W514, W516-1 and 2 plus a 1923 Type 1 Photo when Hank was traded to the Giants. |

I collect items from the 1914 Miracle Braves team, so here are a couple of items with Gowdy:
- 1914 Boston Globe with Gowdy featured promiently on the cover cartoon - 1914 Braves team-signed sheet (signed at a later reunion) incl. Gowdy - giant (maybe 2' x 3') photo of the 1914 Braves team |

Hopefully we can get a bit more love for the original Hammering Hank. Before there was Hammering Hank Greenberg or Hammering Hank Aaron...Hank Gowdy was the original Hammering Hank! To keep the thread going, here's a couple more of my Hank Gowdy items. His 1940 Play Ball and a 1934 Diamond Matchbook (U1). |

As a long time Boston Braves and New York Giants collector( photos, memorabilia and cards) you can’t help but acquire some Hank Gowdy items. A great ball player and an American hero. Some of these are framed on the wall so the images aren’t as clear as I’d like them. The panoramic, which has water damage , shows better than my photo and Hank is in the middle on the insert, hands on hips. I have more original photos and postcards of him than baseball cards.

Some of the items I have featuring Hank Gowdy!

All these magnificent items show just why Hank Gowdy should be in the Hall of Fame. Shame on the voters the 10 times he was on the ballot, and Veteran’s Committee…….whats wrong with you. Not only a great Baseball player, coach et al, but a true American hero, as first to join the military during WWI AND serving again in WW2. You hear all the wailing and lamentations about Jackson and Rose…..but here is a ball player that DEFINED the game. Where is the hue and cry for Hank! Cooperstown should hang their head in shame. He , in my opinion , above many, deserves a spot. Hay decho!

Some amazing pieces in this thread. Marty, that jersey is great.
JJ, I have a lot of sympathy with getting Hank Gowdy in the HoF but when I looked at his stats (WAR etc), I don't think that his one great season is enough to get him there. On of the reasons that I like Hank so much is that besides his 1914 season, he was just a nice guy and a patriot. Whether or not he's ever in the HoF, I think more people could do with knowing his story. |

I don't do cards, here's what I have. The bat is a gamer, and that's fine wire wrapped around the barrel. The page is signed in big beautiful pencil.
PS: that jersey is amazing! |
There's some amazing items in this thread from the cards to Mark's jacket and more.
That's an amazing bat Ken. Thanks everyone for sharing. My want list has grown considerably. |

As evidenced in this T210 Old Mill card, even in 1910 Gowdy was not only rough and ready to serve in the major leagues, but also in two World Wars.
