Ty Cobb T206 PSA Grades
4 Attachment(s)
I just got these cards graded. I really thought I would get better grades from what I've seen others of others graded by PSA and, more importantly, based on the condition of these. Do you think I should crack them open and have them regraded? BTW, I'm asking PSA to center the Red Portrait one since they still have them.
|
Don't waste your $$ cracking and resending
The way they are applying their standards these days - those grades look about what I would expect today- to you point - both, but especially the red are strong eye appeal for the grade examples.
Good luck even getting a response about centering the card before they ship it back. - you should be able to gently tap the holder to center the card in it - I see they left some space for it to move. Hope that helps. Hit me up if you are considering selling. |
Gorgeous cards, congrats on owning those! I would say with the little bit of staining and the centering issues, those grades seem about right to me. Just a couple light taps and you can center that card yourself, easy peasy.
|
Very nice cards! What made you decide to get them graded?

The fronts both look a grade higher (in my opinion) but the staining on the backs costs you that grade. I think they're accurate.

Those Cobbs would have graded 5 and 4 respectively, if graded just a few years ago. Anyone who submits cards for grading at the current time is pretty much getting screwed.
As for the tilting cards, it still amazes me that anyone would use PSA, and that they consider this to be an adequate presentation of such great cards (or any cards for that matter). Create a damned slab that fits the card! It's not like T206 is a rare issue, for God's sake. As for the "framing" of the cards... no amount of tapping and manipulating is going to fix those ugly crumpled baggies that surround the beautiful cards. Those Cobbs (like all vintage cards) would look infinitely better framed in black "tuxes" that actually fit. I'll never understand how anyone opts for PSA, but suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. |
Honestly I'm surprised you got a 4 on the Red with the staining on the back. Easily could've a 3 IMO.
|
I would be happy with those grades.
|
I decided to get a bunch of cards graded so when I die, my daughter doesn't have to deal with the hassle of trying to get them graded to sell them.

Great Cards Man ! Beautiful
|
Those are beautiful cards. At the very least, the red Cobb looks undergraded.
|
I want to thank everyone for your input. I can understand why I received these grades from PSA. I'm very happy with these card no matter what the grade is. They are in beautiful condition, particularly the red one.
|
The term buy the card not the holder would apply here. Great cards.
|
To the people pointing out the stains.. bollocks I say.. no way these stains, which are pretty minimal, not to mention somewhat expected, would have affected the grades nearly as much even 5 years ago. PSA out they damn minds.
Regardless, gorgeous cards!! |

Pretty much agree with most here. Nice cards. If I were a buyer, I would definitely pay a premium for the superior eye appeal.
|
It shouldn't be hard to tap the red one back into place, it may shift during shipping even if it leaves PSA centered.

I have seen other PSA slabs where it definitely looks like some weird plastic around the edges that has a tendency to wrinkle, which I'm guessing is what sets your teeth on edge. But I'm not seeing that feature with these slabs. Then again, maybe when it comes to the red label, all you see is red. |

It’s even worse than you imagine, frosty crumpling. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...060fa31b5f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ba91e312f0.jpg |

Yeah, from their site. Maybe it was caught by QC after that image was captured and flagged as “too centered and straight” and then was reholdered with the proper extra space and tilt. |

But you really cannot see the difference between the clean PSA slab and the crumpled baggie effect? Here's a clean one... https://www.ebay.com/itm/23626794083...Bk9SR966q968Zg And another clean one... https://www.ebay.com/itm/13648158333...Bk9SR966q968Zg Now here's a sloppy crumpled one... https://www.ebay.com/itm/13384772918...Bk9SR966q968Zg You obviously have a great eye for cards, as evidenced by your awesome collection. But if you can spot the minute differences between a 5 and a 6, certainly you can see the much more obvious differences between these 2 styles of slabs. |

But I suppose some people have a hard time focusing on the card because the holder is too distracting. |
I display my cards so the presentation is important to me. But to each his own, of course.
It just seems so unnecessarily lazy on the part of PSA, especially considering they position themselves as the premier brand, their prices are the highest in the industry, and you wait the longest time to get your cards back… all for that?? |

Here’s an example. It’s true that if you focus on the periphery, you’ll probably be distracted. But when it’s in my display case next to lots of other eye candy, I really don’t notice the holder at all. |
I emailed PSA and they replaced the slab and centered the card before shipping it to me.
|
To me, the original cards had the deserved grades and they are nice examples. We see gross miscarriages every day but these aren't some of them.
