Christie’s Auction-Ruth, Gehrig and more

Quite the selection for those who collect the items up for auction and have the budget to do so. Not me but certainly interesting. It is listed as from the Dr. G.B. Espy collection. I do not know how to attach a link to Christie’s but clearly many rare items.

Here’s the link.

Thank you Phil.

I like the Lou Gehrig photo at 13 years old.

shaunsteig 10-12-2025 11:26 PM

Fascinating collection. Thanks for sharing as its enjoyable to peruse and read the blurbs. Amazing what was saved / survived over the years. Curious to see how the final prices compare to the estimates.

Rhotchkiss 10-13-2025 10:04 AM

27% Buyers Premium.....

Also, I think I read somewhere that, unless noted otherwise, all lots have a reserve which is equal to the low estimate for the lot. I cant find that now, as its not under the FAQ for buying, but I believe that's the case. If so, I wonder whether the reserve is before the 27% BP or includes it.

Snapolit1 10-13-2025 10:22 AM

Wonder if consignor was able to negotiate no SC and a piece of the BC with Christies. 27% a big nut to lose. Sure many AH's would give consignor 105% of hammer, if not more.

calvindog 10-13-2025 12:11 PM

Does anyone really think the items in this auction would do better at a Christie's/Sotheby's rather than a Heritage, REA or Goldin auction?

It's not like the people who would bid on this stuff have never heard of the above houses. Just seems like a strange choice.

Schlesinj 10-13-2025 12:16 PM

They have the non-baseball too, so outside of Heritage I think the other stuff may be of interest to other collectors.

The Dr passed away a year or so ago, so maybe an estate is handling this large consignment (with Hunt).

I think that reserves are always based on the "hammer" - the final bid that does not take into consideration the buyer's premium.

Thanks Kevin.

Leon 10-17-2025 12:21 PM

I wonder how much the sellers fee is?

How about the snap of Marilyn at 16! There's some crazy cool stuff in there. I met G.B. at a Hunt auction about 25 years ago, seemed like a really nice fellow. He must have had some collection, wonder if it's all going to come out now. That should be something to see!

Snapolit1 10-22-2025 02:15 PM

Was interesting to watch. Prices on the Gehrig stuff were about what I expected. I made a hard run to steal the 1924 spring training photo but came in 2nd. I was hardly the only one to realize a Gehrig spring training photo from 1924 wasn't a $2,500 photo.

The technical issues they had on this lot were more than a little annoying.

Always fun watching a live auction.

The buyer's commish, local tax, and credit card fee totalled like 35% for me. Kept the bidding down a bit.

I made a run at that photo too Steve. I was hoping the estimate would hold the price down too. I agree, the prices were about what I expected. I had technical issues with the feed all along. Horribly annoying!

Won my 1st item ever from Christie's. I remember the outrage over their shipping costs for their last several sports auctions. The cost estimator button is nice but that's only bid price plus buyers fee...math i can do myself. Give me an estimate on the unknown variable.

Schlesinj 10-24-2025 11:37 AM

Snarky comment coming:
Bought a rare item from NY/London based Christie’s auction with 27% premium and you are worried about the extra $100 shipping from a premium auction house with higher overhead. Have you bought a pizza in 2025 vs 1995?

I bought a bat from one vs a photo from another not expecting a exact calculation if they don’t know the winner is from PA or China.

Let's see it, Michael!

All good:)

How would Christie's NOT know your address when it comes to the cost "estimate" option. Once you are logged in to see this option they know who you are and the system knows your address lol.

Dieges and Clust I don't remember seeing before. I like the large and similar size to the Spaldings. The handles are bats topped with catcher's masks.

The live auction had some incredible pieces. Most well beyond my budget.

I ended up blowing past my budget anyways on the items that ended today, winning 4 lots:
  • Ty Cobb WWI signed photo
  • Babe Ruth single signed ball
  • 1965 Pirates team signed ball with a beautiful Clemente signature
  • 5 - 1925 Yankees programs

Great pickups! I was an underbidder on that Ruth ball, beautiful piece.

Thanks Leon I agree:). Ready to see it in person

Here's to Christie's world class shipping department..... Trophy placed on its head, not double boxed and little packing material. Heard the rattling around as soon as I got the box from FedEx. Oh and the piece of broken catcher's mask is nowhere to be found in the box:cool:
Good thing i opted for the extra damage insurance that at the time I thought was unnecessary!!

Snapolit1 11-21-2025 08:32 AM

Bizarre. I bought a $300 photo from them once and was shipped like I just bought a Rembrandt. Maybe trophies are outside their comfort zone.

Totally disappointed on a trophy I've never seen before! I'll upload pics when site is fully functioning. Whole trophy is sitting like the Leaning Tower of Pisa

ruth-gehrig 11-21-2025 08:17 PM

Pics maybe

ruth-gehrig 12-03-2025 01:10 PM

I don't believe Christie's did their own shipping on this one. Their reply implies they used an outside vendor:confused:

Arazi4442 12-03-2025 02:11 PM

Sorry this happened to you, Michael. That's terribly disappointing. Hope everything works out.
