Is my t206 Mathewson one of the 3 rated higher?

Saw this Heritage Auctions auction and noticed that Heritage said this:

"Christy Mathewson "Dark Cap" with a "Piedmont - 350 Subjects" ad and factory 25 caption. Beautiful portrait that is so very close to being perfectly centered. Graded PSA VG 3. After reviewing several hundreds of submissions, there are well under two hundred confirmed with this brand/series/factory combination. This is one of only three cards graded VG with three rated higher!"

I'll attach my copy and please let me know if my copy is one one of the higher grades.

I don't know what pop report they are looking at:

The piedmont 350 back distinction is total bullshit outside the elite 11, and Matty Dark cap is not one of the elite 11. Find one of the many Ted Z threads (miss you Ted) on this subject- there are 11 cards that exist but are rarely found with a piedmont 350 back. For every other subject, the 350 back is very common.

At some point PSA started distinguishing the piedmont 350 from all other piedmont backs, for all t206 subjects in that series. This was a major mistake bc it falsely elevated the non-importance of that back in all cases except 11. VCP exacerbated the issue by starting to list 350 sales apart from others (I emailed Bobby about this and I got an unnecessarily snarky response, but I believe he has since, correctly, changed it in VCP). Now, auction houses perpetuate the misconception of rarity.

A TON of t206s were graded before PSA even distinguished backs. Many tons more were graded before PSA listed 350 as a separate category of piedmonts. Thus, the PSA pop report on that is flat out, completely wrong. Your Matty Dark cap (very very nice example BTW) may indeed be one of the highest on PSA’s misleading pop report, but I will bet dollars to dimes that there are many t206 matty dark cap piedmont 350s graded higher than yours.

They think the card is a "portrait" which only has a few higher grade listed under p350 only by psa. It's not a difficult card to find either way.

I understood that the Matty dark cap was double printed along with Chance portrait yellow and Cobb red portrait. In short, there must be a number of 350's out there

PSA 7, PSA 6 and PSA 5
All three are Piedmont 350s

+1000
Ryan is absolutely correct!
PSA doesn't do a good job of correctly maintaining their database.
Especially when it comes to Piedmont, Piedmont 150 and Piedmont 350 backs

A Cycle SLer??!
What is frustrating is when you point out obvious mistakes to PSA they send you the automated response and rarely follow through with corrections
I don’t even bother anymore

PSA has Dolly Stark with 39 cards graded 3, however I have 44 verified certs for Stark in PSA 3
For some reason it seems PSA doesn't include the Piedmont only cards in the Pop Reports

While I don't disagree about the problems with PSA's pop report on T206's if you follow the link I posted above it shows that Heritage just completely missed the mark on their description somehow. While I used the auction results page because it's easier to find a single card than on the pop report, going to the pop report page it also completely contradicts the listing.

Piedmont 350 Matty Dark Cap:

PSA 8.5 - 1
PSA 8 - 2
PSA 7 - 3
PSA 6 - 7
PSA 5.5 - 1
PSA 5 - 15
PSA 5(Q) - 2
PSA 4.5 - 6
PSA 4 - 18
PSA 4(Q) - 3
PSA 3.5 - 2
PSA 3 - 23
PSA 3(Q) - 2

So I don't know what they were looking at. 23 threes and even if you throw out ALL qualified cards there are 55 graded higher, straight from the PSA pop report.

Kidnapped18 10-26-2025 06:56 PM

Great point Scott!
PSA own pop report doesn't justify the AH description

Yoda 10-27-2025 01:24 PM

So what do the AH's due to the 350 back gap? Why raise the BP of course.
