E98 - Set of 30 - Question, comparative rarity

Posted By: Dan Mathewson
Anyone have any idea if blue backs are most rare in the E98's, or are the red backs more uncommon? I have a red back...

Here's an example of a blue.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1583474106

E98 - Set of 30 - Question, comparative rarity

Posted By: petecld
In my experience this is my breakdown on availability:

Orange (most common)
Green
Blue
Red (least common)

NOTE: All 4 seem to be pretty evenly available. The difference between orange/red is small and in my opinion not enough to warrent any premium value just because of the color. I think the red backgrounds are seen slightly less often because most E98 collector's I've talked to like the red the most (myself included) and less willing to sell those.

An E98 in high grade with a red background is just a sight to behold. Especially when they are in SGC holders.

(sorry, couldn't resist the last remark.)

Posted By: Dan Mathewson
...I can see this grading thing is gonna die hard....

Well, I have never seen the other two variations. I have a red back now, and it looks great (in my office photo which Scott was kind enough to post it is in the far right photo on the far right). The blue one on eBay looks really nice, too. I didn't even know there were two others. LOL... Cuz calls my red back the commie variation and the blue back Matty's TB card.

Posted By: TBob
The E93 Matty is the glove to chest picture, the E98 is the hands over head picture. If you saw a red Matty, it was probably the E98, I don't recall ever seeing a red E93 Matty. My E93 is a dark orange, but not red.

Posted By: Mike Williams
overprint is found on the E98 issue only. It's purple in color and is the advertised name of a 5 cent cigar. Here's a link to Pete's site that shows the back - http://www.caramel-cards.com/e98.html
