according to Cap Anson...... Posted By: John(z28jd)
...In the January 10,1918 issue of The Sporting News he was asked to pick his all-time team and he choose the following players:
Catcher: Buck Ewing and King Kelly
1B: Cap Anson(how nice of him to include himself )
2B: Fred Pfeffer
3B: Ned Williamson
SS: Bill Lange
OF: George Gore, Jimmy Ryan and Hugh Duffy
P: Amos Rusie,John Clarkson and Jim McCormick

interesting list considering Anson had been around since the beginning of the NL but theres more non-hall of famers than hall of famers on the list. Knowlegeable fans might also notice that only 2 of the players werent teammates of Anson and none of the players played significant time after 1900(Ryan 234 games,Duffy played 113 games,Rusie played just 3) |

according to Cap Anson...... Posted By: Marc S.
was one of those very few players who seemed like they looked at a lot of pitches. Very rare to see someone who routinely was at the top of the league in both strikeouts and walks.

Lange was definitely a great player when he played. Quick, great eye, a good offensive player. However, he only played 7 seasons so that probably disqualifies him alone (I'm not sure if pre-1900 players have a different set of rules).

Piano Legs Gore was also a very good player -- not one of the best ever, but definitely a memorable All-Star, long-career type. |

according to Cap Anson...... Posted By: Jay Miller
Ewing must have been quite the player. About the same time Connie Mack called him the greatest catcher he had ever seen. |

according to Cap Anson...... Posted By: jay behrens
I've seen a number of vintage articles that claim Ewing was the greatest all around player in the history of the game. And these were articles form the teens and 20s.

Jay |
