An Interesting Photograph

I was fascinated by the image because it not only shows a nine-member team but also a man in an 1870s-1880s wheelchair. Most wheelchairs of this time were apparently three-wheeled affairs operated by hand cranks.

My question is this: what do you think the man's role was with the team? Could he be a manager? coach? umpire? player? mascot? Has anyone else seen a picture like this?
