W517 Hornsby - what is this???

Posted By: leon
It's the original artwork used to make the W517 card. These come around, for different series, every so often. I would think the price is about right from the past auctions I have seen.....but what do I know? I think it looks cool.......regards

W517 Hornsby - what is this???

Posted By: dan mckee
Price is in line or possibly a little low for original art which it is. As usual, Leon is correct. I sold original art from the 1952 bowman football issue and the player was a scab and I received $1000.00 for it. Dan.

W517 Hornsby - what is this???

Posted By: hankron
There was a particularly interesting 'find' about the wrestling art. There is one card that is the 'Honus Wagner' of Exhibit wrestling cards, with only one example of the card known to exist. There has always been wonderment about why the card was so rare. I was going through the original wrestling photos for the cards and came across the original art for the card. On the art, the Exhibit editor/printer wrote that the card was to be removed from the set, which card was to replace it in the set and the date it was removed from the set. Case solved.

Also, for a particular set, Exhibit would make a series of finished painted photos, but only about 80 percent of the art would be used to make cards. Some poses and even some indivuduals were removed from the set. The unused ones are are known as the 'ghost' Exhibit cards.

Posted By: hankron
The pose itself has been used for other things, but the Exhibit card is not known to exist.

I may be mistaken, but I don't beleive there is a football Exhibit card of Nagurski either. Possibly there were contractural issues, as there are few other reasons why Exhibit wouldn't include him in the wrestling set. He was one of the most famous athletes at the time, football or wrestling.
