What makes one spend $4K for this card?
 

Posted By: <b>Cy</b><p>I know this is not vintage cards, but it is ebay and it is about buying cards.<br /><br />A friend asked me to find him a Roger Clemens rookie card for his son. The BGS 10 went for <b>$3,938.88</b>!<br /><br />Does the winner wear T-shirts that state <i>I have TOO much money</i>?<br /><br />If you took both cards out of the holder, gave them to the winner, told him to pick one, then mixed them up and told him to pick one again, I bet there is a very good chance he wouldn't pick the same card. Why is a card worth $3879.88 more than the other, when they are just about the same quality?<br /><br />I don't begrudge anyone for buying a card that he/she wants and can afford. But this is plain and simple someone buying the number <b>10</b> on the card holder and not the card.<br /><br />I am still shaking my head in disbelief.<br /><br />Have a Merry Christmas everyone.<br /><br />Cy

Posted By: <b>DD</b><p>Maybe it's because it's a BGS 10 from the tougher of the two Beckett Grading companies. Perhaps a 10 from the other one wouldn't have gone for as much.

Posted By: <b>Paul</b><p>I agree that there is usually no discernible difference between a 9 and a 10. But in this case there is a difference. The 9 has nice black borders. The 10 seems to have a lot of white showing, especially on the upper left edge. I think you could easily tell these two cards apart outside their holders, and condition-conscious collectors would pick the 9 every time.

Posted By: <b>PASJD</b><p>A substantial percentage of the PSA 10s in the world are PSA 9s that were resubmitted, or were "bumped" by PSA in the days it was doing that sort of thing as a favor to dealers. Only in America. By the way, how can a card be better than Mint? Still a mystery to me.
