So what do we know, now, about PSA/GAI/SGC grading hand-cut cards?

Posted By: Bob Marquette
(This thread does not apply to strip cards)
1) GAI no longer will grade them and call them authentic
2) SGC never graded them and won't do it now
3) PSA will grade them IF the individual grader wants to

That said, check out the Payne E-90-3 on the left. Those borders didn't just melt away. How did this one pass through SGC?

Sure looks handcut to me.
P.S. Damn shame that 30-40% of 1909 Obaks will never be graded, no matter how nice they look because of hand-cutting.

Posted By: petecld
The wear on the Payne is too heavy to say if it was ever trimmed. Looks like honest wear to me - a lot of it - but still honest wear.

What's odd is that they made a printing error look like a legitimate variation.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Hand cut cards from cereal boxes can include advertisements, or not, without impact on PSA grading.

Although this subject is probably not the initial intent of this thread, the above status seems (to me) to require a definition of what constitutes a complete cut out card.

There are plenty of similar examples of inadequate definition of "completeness" of a hand cut non-strip card.

Posted By: Judge Dred
I believe that I've seen Zeenut cards w/o the coupon graded by SGC. I realize that Zeenuts didn't have coupons the first two years issued, I have a few graded examples of those. If the removal of the coupon is not trimming (hand cut on at least one border) then how do they justify assigning a grade to the card? My guess is that the graders may not have known about it or overlooked it.

Posted By: jay behrens
The reason that Zeenuts get graded without the coupon is that so few exist with a coupon that they would be throwing out a a good source of revenue if they rejected couponless Zeenuts as trimmed. The card size with a coupon properly trimmed is known, so I am pretty sure they will not grade them if they come up too short.

Jay

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming --- WOW, What a ride!

Posted By: Judge Dred
I saw that Thorpe card. It's even nice without the coupon. Could you imagine what it could have sold for WITH the coupon. I had heard different stories about how grading services handled Zeenuts w/o coupons. I like Zeenuts but grading them w/o the coupon just doesn't seem right. I'd make an analogy that is probably pretty poor but here goes: What about Old Judge cards with the company name cut off the bottom? I know that these were not redeemable but it is assumed that they were removed from cards to avoid promoting the evils of smoking.

If only Zeenuts with coupons were graded then there would be very few available that are encapsulated. This is why the services should offer the "authentic" labeling. If you don't like grading services then it really doesn't matter much, I guess.

Posted By: leon
I think they should be a little more consistent (read grade them please) on some issues that are like the Zeenuts. I sent in a Ferguson Bakery- Wood in and they wouldn't grade it without the tab. Heck, I've NEVER seen one with a tab and only about 2-3 without !! They also wouldn't grade an Allstar Baseball card that is trimmed (as most are). They also won't grade one of my Babe Ruth Headin' Home cards, or the aforementioned '09 Obaks.....But they grade Zeenuts w/o tabs ?? The argument hasn't finished with them yet regards all
