Pinkerton Cabinets

Posted By: Adam B
I do not know much about these and have never even held one in my hand. I was hoping some of the board members could tell me a little about them - i.e. have they ever been reproduced, is the photo pretty sharp, etc. I am trying to figure out how to verify the authenticity of some Pinkerton's that have apparently been removed from their mounts (assuming they all came mounted).

Thanks

Adam B

This means the images have no dot pattern.

Look for silvering in the unmounted T5 photos. Silvering is a silvery, mirror-like effect that appears in the dark areas of some old photos. It can be seen in person, when holding the photo at an angle to the light. As silvering is an aging process, it is a strong sign of old age for a photo. Also, photo paper back then was thin, even thinner than the average 1950s photo paper. I have seen few if any real photo (no dots) reprints of the unmounted photos, so I don't think reprints is a big concern like with T206s and Goudeys.

The Pinkerton postcards, which is a separate issue, does have dot pattern.

Posted By: Jeff Mohler
Does anyone know when the postcards and scorecards were issued? Were they issued in conjunction with the cabinets or were they a reprint issued sometime after the cabinets?

It's a fair guess to say the postcards/scorecards came second, reprinting the T5 images. However, the postmarks found on some of the postcards show that they too were made in the 1910s.

Posted By: Anonymous
Thanks for all the input. The reason I asked is because the cards I saw appeared to be a bit grainy and it did not register that they may have been made into postcards or scorecards. Shows how little I know about these.

Adam B

Posted By: davidcycleback
The non-photo ones come with postcard, generic scorecard and blank backs. They are commonly called "Pinkerton Postcards," though, for obvious reasons, some call the "Pinkerton Scorecards." Back then some postcards had blank backs, so the blank backs likely are postcards (some of the blank backs were used as postcards and have stamps and such). They are all collectable and have appeared in MastroNet auctions. I'm not aware of these being reprinted either.
