1929 Star Player Candy (Type 2) Lou Gehrig
Posted By: Chris Bland
hi all - I was hoping to gather some information on the 1929 star player candy set (type 2's). I was lucky enough recently to pick up a Gehrig, and there are some notable differences between it and the 1928 star candys. First, it has a different type face on the caption, and also, it has a neat little writeup about the player on the back. I guess what I'd like to know is a) if anyone has seen a type 2 before and b) how these would rank in terms of rarity. I appreciate any of your feedback.

1929 Star Player Candy (Type 2) Lou Gehrig
Posted By: David Vargha
I have never seen one before and my understanding is that they are almost nonexistant. I may be wrong, but for some reason I think Mike Wentz at BMW cards either has one, had one or can fill you in on some info.

DavidVargha@hotmail.com

1929 Star Player Candy (Type 2) Lou Gehrig
Posted By: Bruce Babcock
I have a few Type Ones but have never seen a Type Two in person. Type Ones are seldom seen and I'm guessing Type Twos are several times rarer. Great pickup.

Posted By: Ben
Really an amazing card chris! Ive heard about Star Candy type 2s but have never seen one before - not on ebay, or in any major auction. So I'd imagine you have a very rare, and very valuable piece on your hands there. Congrats on a great pickup

Hello! My first post here. I have quite a few 1929 Star Player Candy cards that will be in the Fall REA Auction. They include:
Lou Gehrig Walter Johnson Jack Dempsey These are very rare! I hope you check them out on Nov. 17th. I also have most of the other cards from this set which will also be in the auction. Follow up post soon. |
I plan on bidding on your gehrig
|
I plan to go hard on your Gehrig.
|
Hold My Plutonium
I plan to go Nuclear on your Gehrig.
|
I plan to watch diligently from the sidelines and think about the semantics of bidding nuclear.

I'd love to see these cards in SGC slabs.
|
I will be watching hard nuclear from the sidelines - semantically speaking.
Any thread that has Hal Lewis, Bruce Babcock and Dave Vargha is a thread I felt I needed to participate in. |
Thanks for posting the 1929 Star Player cards...I don't recall having seen the printed backs before. It would have been cool if they had done this for the 1928 issue as well.
The only 1929 baseball subjects that are known (according to the Old Cardboard site) are Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Walter Johnson. Any new baseball (or non-baseball) additions to this set's checklist? Good luck with the auctions. If I were financially situated at a much higher level, there would be that possibility of me going supervolcano on Gehrig and all the rest of them. Funny
Quality control being what it was back then….. I think they mixed up the nickname for Walter Johnson with Smokey Joe Wood!!!! Johnson had other nicknames most notably The Big Train but I couldn’t find anything where anyone ever called him Smoky Joe.

I plan on participating in the Gehrig global nuclear warfare party
|
I guess we will see who has the most megatons in their arsenal.

Warfare
I will be going pea shooter on a common

I hope that collectors focus on the Gehrig card and overlook the WaJo card! :D

LOL, they forgot to mention that Lou Gehrig was also known in certain circles as... "The Babe". |

I also have quite a few 1933 Goudey cards in the auction including several Babe Ruth's and a fairly nice Lou Gehrig. Also a really nice 1933 Sports Kings Jim Thorpe card that was graded a 5 by SGC. https://www.net54baseball.com/album....ictureid=36798 |
Got any football Star Player Candy cards? Always looking for them if you do as I'm working on the set.
