York Caramel Question
 

Posted By: <b>Scot Reader</b><p><br />Based on an ebay front scan I recently bought a card in an SGC 84 holder labelled as an E210 1927 York Caramel (the card is Reuther #2). The card arrived and it is blank-backed. Does this mean for sure that it is a W502 and that SGC screwed-up? Or is there such a thing as a blank-backed E210? And if there is such a thing as a blank-backed E210 how can they be distinguished from a W502? Thanks, Scot

Posted By: <b>Rhys</b><p>I just was thinking the same thing last week because I bought two blank backed cards of Schalk and Covaleskie which look and feel EXACTLY like the many York Caramels I have owned. When I further checked the Card Catalog, the numbers only match with those of the Ice Cream and Caramel issues and the 1928 W502 cards, but the look and feel of Yorks is different from these other issues. I was always under the impression that there are blank backed York caramels but these are the first I have owned. Afurther testament is the fact that both cards I have exhibit light caramel staining as well.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.network54.com/Realm/tmp/1144100791.JPG">

Posted By: <b>Anson</b><p>There seem to be a lot of similarities to the Yorks and W502s. Also, don't forget about the UNC strip cards from 31'. They have nearly the same format as the other two but are a much smaller set.<br /><br />

Posted By: <b>Scot Reader</b><p><br />All,<br />Thanks for the information.<br /><br />Scot,<br />My Reuther has a look (tan color, photo quality, very light brown staining) and thickness similar to your Grimes--so maybe it is a York Caramel after all.<br /><br />All,<br />Follow up question: Any idea how many blank-backed Yorks there are relative to Yorks with printing on the back? 1:1; 1:10; 1:100; 1:1000? Any ballpark estimate would be appreciated.

Posted By: <b>Anson</b><p>Scot, I don't think there are enough Yorks out there to even get to 1:1000. Although they haven't been cataloged as such, I would bet that there are several out there (as it seems that a few board memebers have them). They're cool, nevertheless.
