Posted By: Hal Lewis
The team they are listed on is a Player's League team.

For example: Comiskey in 1890 for Chicago.

He played 1889 and 1891 for St. Louis in the Ntl. League.

The only Chicago team he ever played for during the N172 days was the Player's League team:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/comisch01.shtml

N172 help please...PL
Posted By: Zach Rice
Not every 1890 N172 is marked PL or NL like the Comiskey that Hal pointed out. However the card can be dated to 1890 because Comiskey is shown playing for Chicago and he only played with them for one year, 1890. Chicago happened to be a team in the Players League.
