Posted By: peter chao
Guys,

Be patient...I know you don't want to hear about the shiny new stuff. But I wanted to start a thread on the best pulls from a wax box.

This a.m. I was all excited by the Derek Jeter error in '07 Topps so I went to my favorite wholeseller and bought two boxes of '07 Topps for $70 each which is below the market price. I opened one box and got 3 of the Derek Jeter error cards.

Not only that one of the error card was gold and numbered to 2007. I pulled number 142/2007. So this is the best wax box I've ever opened.

So guys, I want to know your stories about your best pulls from a wax box.

Peter

Posted By: leon
Last year at the National (I think it was last year, or the year before) Richard M. and myself sifted through lots of "shiny stuff" packs he bought, opening many packs at our table, looking for the T206 Wagner grand prize. We didn't get one but Glen V's son was the happy recipient of the cards.... Anything about collecting cards is good.....and this occasional O/T by a frequent poster is fine too....best regards

Posted By: Paul
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the Derek Jeter error? With the cards out for only a few days now, has it already been corrected?

Posted By: Randy Trierweiler
Paul, its a lot of hype over a brand new 2007 Topps card of #40 Derek Jeter that shows George Bush, and Mickey Mantle that were photo-shopped into the card. Its so rare that there have been 4500 all ready sold on Ebay, and another 1700 currently available. Its a $3 card that has sold for over $100 due to the hype, but the prices are down to $3-$25 as of late.

Posted By: Steve f
I believe Jeter is in several cards in this set. Standard, Copper, Gold etc... Gold is the most rare only #2007 copies.

Posted By: john/z28jd
Actually Steve Copper is the rarest one with only 56 available. Gold is numbered to 2007 so its a huge difference. The card has been going for over $400 for the regular base card but now its back down to around $35 and should drop more when all the hype wears off and the market is flooded with them. The cards total production numbers in high 6 figures worth so theres no way people will be paying more than $10 tops when its all said and done. Its also not technically an error card since it was obviously done on purpose and hasnt been changed yet.Theyre still rolling off the printing presses as we speak

Posted By: Paul
That's funny. I had actually seen a picture of the Jeter card on ebay and thought I saw Mantle in the dugout. I assumed I was seeing things in a bad scan. Somehow, I didn't notice George Bush.

Posted By: Chad
I pulled a Spahn and Feller in a pack I bought for 20 bucks. This was in 1986, I think. I was excited at the time and still have the wrapper as 20 bucks was a lot of money for me then. Of course, when I first started collecting, anytime I pulled a card with the all star designation, I was pretty excited, especially in 1981.

--Chad

Posted By: Chris Counts
In the early 70s, I picked up a box of 1957 Topps football cell packs for about $15. I opened every single pack, pulling rookies of Unitas, Hornung and Starr. Imagine what they would have graded!

Posted By: Steve M.
Best as I can recall it was pushing $200 at one time. You may or may not know but there were several versions of this card. One with the F*** F***, one with the blackout and one with an air brush.

I bought the boxes at the time they came out way back when and when it was publized that the card existed. One of my kids was really into the shiny stuff at that time.

Posted By: T206Collector
The last year I bought shiny stuff with any regularity was 1998. I pulled a Travis Lee parallel insert rookie card that was limited to 100 copies, before Lee ever played a single game. Almost immediately, I sold it on an internet baseball card swap board (I wasn't an ebayer yet) for $100.

Shiny stuff is no fun since it never holds its value. Topps may only issue 2007 Jeter cards this year with gold borders? So what, Topps has already issued millions of Jeter cards. There will never be any true scarcity -- and, with modern players, what's to say that they won't suffer dramatic declines in performance or injury? Jeter's cards are already priced as if he is going to be a member of the 3,000 hit club and a first ballot HOFer. There will not be a meaningful bump in the value of his cards that can be attributed to anything other than inflation.

And, if you are savvy enough to get in on the ground floor of a rookie nobody's ever heard of, chances are you won't have the right issue to go to the bank. I purchased 50 Frank Thomas rookies for $.25 each when he was in college. 3 MVP awards later, they were worth $4.00 each, and I could sell them for $2.00 each to a dealer. "You should've bought 50 of the 1990 Leaf issue, kid." Ditto with Jeter. "You should've bought 50 of the 1993 SP Foil, kid."

Of course, if you're just collecting the new stuff to collect and you don't care about relative scarcity and inability to hold value -- well, then hey, enjoy!

Posted By: Dave
I was 13 at the time and pulled 2 FF's out of one single pack of cards. They were somewhere around $200-250 each at the time. My dad told me to hold unto both the cards for a while....nice one dad...

Posted By: davidcycleback
My best and most valuable card I pulled from a pack was a Jim Brown
autographed football insert. I think he was the most expensive player
you could get. It was a neat card too, as it was acetate
(semi transparent plastic). The brand was either Score or Playoff.
