Somewhat O/T: Interesting baseball movies on TMC tonight
Posted By: D. C. Markel
I've never seen or heard of this film, but it's called "Headin' Home" filmed in 1920 featuring Babe Ruth. It's on Turner Movie Classics at midnight Eastern Time (11:00 pm central, 9:00 pm pacific). I plan to record it on my DVR.

Also, "Safe At Home" featuring Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris is on at 10:00 pm eastern.

After the Ruth movie there is another silent film entitled "His Last Game" (1909) where a Native American baseball player resists gamblers' demands that he throw a game and finally another called "The Ball Player and the Bandit", filmed in (1912).

http://www.tcm.com/schedule/index.jsp?startDate=10/07/2007&timezone=CST&cid=N
Somewhat O/T: Interesting baseball movies on TMC tonight
Posted By: Joann
Wow - thanks for the heads up. I'm going to set my VCR (yes, that's still with a V and not a D!) right now.

TCM always has interesting silents and shorts late on Sunday nights. I should NOT see them if I want to get enough sleep, but I often do.

A few months ago I caught the last part of a pre-sound version of The Wizard of Oz - from like the 20's or something. After that they had a 13 minute short silent of the Wizard of Oz from 1910. Seriously - the whole dang story crammed into a 15 minute short film with no sound. The tornado was some guy wrapped in cotton spray-painted gray that spun across the stage - you could see his legs out the bottom and it didn't look like they tried to hide them much. He had little fences and dogs glued to the outside of the cotton. It was hilarious.

So I will tape the Babe, and better yet the two shorts after that about baseball right in our collecting era.

How perfect. Thanks again.

J

Edited to revise a few minor errors of fact regarding the 1910 version.
