question about the backs of d304s

Posted By: ali_lapoint
i have a simple question for you guys. with brunners backs, are authentic brunners printed with only green ink backs? or do there exist brunners with black print backs as well? i ask because i've been looking into acquiring one and have found examples of both. however, at times the raw examples i see have black ink backs and the graded examples have green ink backs. at first i was put off by the raw examples i've seen with black ink backs because i thought they were reprints. however, after searching the internet i was able to find this photo of a graded example with a black ink back which i have posted below. does anyone know if the black ink backs are definitely reprints and this one somehow slipped through the cracks or was the set in fact printed with both color backs?

i can't get the link to work with just the photo but here is a link to the webpage where the black ink back can be viewed:

http://www.tonyetrade.com/ImageViewer.aspx?Size=O&PhotoID=3528&CompanyID=1

same card but with a green back:

Posted By: leon
Peter....uh..I mean ali.....I will have to check when I get home about this one being green....thanks for visiting my for-sale website though....I know the card is real and if it's really green I might have to keep it...It might have just been my imperfect scanning abilities....

Posted By: Steve Murray
Alan:

What Leon is saying is that your scan of the O'Toole is from his website.

P.S. You must be looking at Tony's on a black and White monitor. The back is clearly green.

question about the backs of d304s

Posted By: ali_lapoint
oh. who is peter?

am i crazy then? because to me there is a pretty huge difference in color between the two cards' backs. leon's is bright green while tony's looks either very dark or blackish to me.

question about the backs of d304s

Posted By: ali_lapoint
ok. fair enough. but you really think tony's back is clear bright green like leons? maybe i'm having situational color blindness but to me the backs differ greatly in appearance and are totally different in color. maybe i'm crazy?

question about the backs of d304s

Posted By: Joe D.
ali -

both backs are green.

the difference in darkness is either the scan settings or maybe the ink did indeed run a little darker in one than the other.

I don't think there is much else to it.

question about the backs of d304s

Posted By: ali_lapoint
i thought so too thats why i had passed on the cards i've come across with black ink backs. but when i did a google image search i came across that one tony has and thought perhaps there do exist copies with black ink backs. after looking at tony's for a while i agree with everyone else that it just a darker green variation. i'm happy that my gut was right and kept me from making some bone head moves.

i just love this set a lot and have been trying to find an example for my collection for a while. i love the look of the barry card. one of my favorite images ever next to the eddie collins e90 and the mack where he's sitting in the dugout.

Posted By: JimB
All Bruners have green ink. There are some very good reprints with black ink. They are also a little smaller in size. They fooled me once many years ago.
JimB
