E121/E122 Unusual Card **Opinions Needed**

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
Well, I picked up a card the other day of Ferd Schupp that upon first glance appears to be an E121 (Series of 80) card of him but it just looked strange so I bought it. I get it today, and I am kinda unsure what to make of it. The card has been graded by SGC as an E121 Series of 80 (grade 50 VGEX).

The card appears to be a mix of both the E121 set and the E122 set. Please see scans below, I am sorry for the size of the scans but I wanted to show detail.

The front of E122 cards were simply reproductions of E121 cards with a new border added and a "screen" appearance given to the photos (kinda ugly cards but that is the charm of them). The Schupp has this screan appearance but obviously has a more "E121-like" border, but the team name is in all-caps which is unlike either.

The back of the card is pretty obvious that it appears to be an E122, as the last line is in the stylized font only found on E122's and the TOUGH E121 Series of 80 Type 3 back's--and it appears identical to the E122.

It seems to me that this is actually an E122 card where they added the name/team/position on the border/screen that was added above the old E121 card.

Does anyone have any opinions or other E122 cards they can confirm have this appearance? Any help is appreciated.

-Rhett

Posted By: leon
Do we have any other E121 Ferd cards around to see if there is something going on with his card in particular? Just for the record why couldn't this just be different font American Caramel (or their printer) used? They could have stopped the presses, changed fonts quickly, and started back producing? Or was it way too involved, back in the day, to do that?

Posted By: Kevin Andrews
Does anybody have a Schupp card from the E122 set? Is there any posibility that his card doesn't have the name in the gray box like all the others?

Posted By: petecld
The picture quality and font appear to be from the W501 series but it lacks the 501 numbers along the top and obviously not a blank back. I checked all of my E122s (no Schupp) but they are all share the format like the Doak card. Very interesting card. This is why I love this hobby.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
Actually, my thinking is similar to Kevin's in that I believe this card is actually an E122 Ferd Schupp, and instead of leaving the name/pos/team visible through the frame they placed on the E121 cards they remade (which is the set we call E122), they had his name/pos/team on the frame up they did.

The players real name was Ferd and supposedly there are 2 versions in the E122 set, one listing "Ferd" and one with "Fred". I am wondering if this was their way of "correcting" their mistake.
-Rhett
