The cartoon of Mr. Met signing an autograph first appeared in the 1963 Mets Yearbook, along with other images of baseball's best mascot, on a page introducing the character.
Interestingly, the real Mr. Met actually does sign autographs, and you might find it amazing to learn that they're actually legible! (See photo below.)
