One of the guys I learned a lot from about hobbies in general once told me
- You can't pay too much, but you can pay too soon.
For most things that just means that you'd have to hold on to an item a while to get any profit at all. Sometimes a couple years, sometimes longer. There are few exceptions, although most commons from about 1980 till now were probably paid for generations too soon.
