Bennett "Bennie" "Benny" Tate was a backup catcher and pinch hitter for his entire MLB career. His rookie year was 1924 when, at age 22, he appeared in 21 games (46 plate appearances) for the WS Champion Washington Senators. Tate appeared in 566 games during his 10-year career, with a total of 1,717 plate plate appearances, 435 hits, and a .279 batting average. The unusual home run George mentioned above was Tate's first MLB homer, one of only four homers for his entire career.

Hardly any cards of Tate were produced during his playing days. Below is a pic of his 1936 V355 World Wide Gum card. I'm still searching for his 1937 R314 Goudey "Wide Pen" Type 5 card. Also below is Tate's 4"x 5" photo from the 1924 National Photo set of Senators players (there was a recent Net54 thread about this set of photos).

One of my most prized 1924 Senators items, shown below, is an oversized photo of the 1924 team that originated from the estate of Bennie Tate that I won many years ago in a Legendary auction. I have enlarged the part of this photo that shows Tate.
