Default Oms

Al, what a beautiful postcard. He is also one of my favorites. He should be in the National Hall of Fame. From 1917 to 1946 he would play baseball in the United States, Cuba, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. He had a combined career .340 batting average. I first learned about Cuban Baseball cards from an owner of an Antiquarian bookstore in Miami. He spoke fondly about Cuban baseball and taught me a lot about its history and great players. He spoke most fondly about Alejandro Oms, or "El Caballero," like he was known in Cuba. What more can you say about a ballplayer nickname was "The Gentleman" because of his character and integrity.
