It has nothing to do with counterfeiting. If you look at a card from the side it is 2 pieces glued together. It is fairly easy to remove the top thin layer the front is printed on from the cardboard stock that makes up the majority of the card the back is printed on. The white front thin layer is to get a much higher quality picture.
