I am familiar with Evers as his family owned a sporting goods store in Albany, NY as recent as the late 80's to early 90's. I've have always know it to be pronouced with a strong "E" sound. I would think the first inclination would be to prounounce it this way as in Christmas "Eve" with an "rs" on the end. Although, I realize there are some strang pronunciations.
