DJI collect signed cards and I can tell you with the invention of eBay, it's never neen easier and you can get some bargains out there.
If you stick to the level that you stick at (your purchase), you don't necessarily have to worry about fraud (which mostly takes place in the current guys like Bonds and Pujols).
I have started and stopped a 1953 Topps complete set in signed form now for about ten years and everyonce in a while, I will pick up a small lot for like $4-6 each. People buy these massive signed card lots from auctions and try and flip it (with a lot of hard work) on eBay in smaller lots or individually.
