Leo I was one of the greatest popes of the Church, being a learned theologican and an able, energetic and brave leader - for instance, he personally persuaded Attila the Hun not to invade Rome in 452, and prevented a massacre when Genseric (King of the Vandals) and his men eventually succeeded in invading Rome in 455.
