Barry,
I may be confused on who provides estimates, but I thought there were more that do so. I also bid in a lot of none sport related auctions where estimates are provided and invariably the estimates are quite a bit lower than items are going to go for. At the end of the auctions the auction house can then say "record auction, 40% higher than estimate".

I was not referring to opening bids.
