Andrew S.Ruth lived for the fastball. There just weren't enough of them when he played and he only hit 714 HRs as a result. Now move forward to today where pitchers are firing the ball much faster. Ruth would have over 1000 HRs. I remember reading that scientists tested Ruth and stated he had the fastest reflexes and eye/hand coordination ever measured at that time.
Cobb would fare much worse and would likely be frustrated by the speed of today's pitchers.
