Both scenarios are "tied to the hip". If the lower grade stuff shoots up or down in value, then PSA 4 commons will go up or down as well. I don't see the distinction. However, if I were building a prewar collection with the idea of selling for monetary gain in the distant future. Then I would go with the lower grade hall-of-famers. Buying cards is the easy part of the flipping equation; it's the selling that creates a challenge for those flippers that are not battle-tested. Selling Cobb's, Mathewson's, Lajoie's and Waddell's in 2022 when you might have some arthritis, a couple of alimony payments under your belt, and the realization that you won't stay old forever, will be infinitely easier and receive alot more attention, then selling a bunch of PSA 4 and 5 "T206" Jones and/or Horrace Clarke cards.
