I firmly believe the "card" that guy burned was not a card at all. The burning occurred shortly after the first time we at Baseball Cards magazine printed a full-size, full-color picture of a 1952 Topps Mantle, and the card being shown in that photo was centered EXACTLY the same as our magazine photo.
I remember this picture well and often wondered if the card was real. It would have made no sense to burn a card like that, which at the time was just as much sought after as it is today. I think this post answers my question. I remember the Baseball Cards magazine with that picture and I would bet that Bob's comments above were dead on!
