I think it's an optical illusion.
Looking at the scans as shown, it does look like a 5.
But blown up to 200% it looks like a 6 with a very weak top line.
That could make the eye enhance the dark left side into a corner.
Of course, normal definition computer scans can be misleading in lots of ways.
