When I read the "Old Cardboard" article about Western Playgrounds, I was surprised not to see any mention of the close resemblance of the printing to the early Zeenuts (lettering). It sounds like you already have information on that connection - possibly it's common knowledge among PCL card collectors.
I don't know anything about Big Eaters, but Leon has handled plenty of all the issues you mention.
