He finished 3rd in the voting for the 1947 Rookie of the Year Award, won by Jackie Robinson. Would have won the AL ROY Award if one had been awarded in each league. He was the winning pitcher in the 1947 All-Star game. Started games 1,5, and 7 for the New York Yankees as they won the 1947 World Series championship. Taught Robert Redford how to pitch in an "old-time style" for the film The Natural.
