The first story is all about Red Grange. His Dad encouraged him to jump high. Then Red played Wheaton High School ball and got a job hauling 100 pound blocks of ice. Red knew football was his "dish". A former University of Illinois athlete George Dawson recruited him to play college for coach Bob Zuppke. "You've got speed to burn Red but you will have to learn how to cut back". In his first game VS Nebraska Red scored three touchdowns as Illinois whipped the Cornhuskers 34-0. Red carried ice again during the summer. October 18 1924 before 69,000 fans in their new stadium Red ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown and had scoring runs of 95 yds 65 yds 54 yds and 48 yds also threw for a touchdown! Red led Illinois to her first conference in years (1925), and the pro offers started coming in. "It's the Bears for me Mr. Halas" 13 years with the Bears, one of his greatest thrill was he caught a forward pass giving the Bears the 1932 Championship. Then Red got a contract to broadcast College Football games.
