Steve - congrats on the EPDG. They don't come up for sale all that often, so I certainly don't think the price was out of line - especially with the dating. As for your question regarding tax stamps, you're assumption regarding 1901 stamps is correct. Although it's the general rule, it doesn't apply in all scenarios. Overprints were used, in part, to obviate the need for printing new stamps every year. Although probably not to frequent, it is entirely conceivable that a 1901 tax was used in 1910.
