We know that A-Rod isn't going to keep up this pace. Also, Lou Gehrig and Jimmy Foxx played first base, that is obviously an easier position to play than 2nd base. Hornsby's .401 is still better than either Gehrig or Foxx. Hornsby was also in the midst of winning 6 batting titles in a row.

I just love my Baseball Encyclopedia.
