Sorry nothing to add about the actual set and the actual year of issue. I'm going to guess some hard core N284 collector has researched the player/team combos to see what year is consistent with the card set.
I think the baseball players are all 1887. I made a bunch of notes earlier this year about the set. This Meyers looks a lot like the actual player...I agree that the generic ones are tough to pony-up for towards the set.
