Default “Satchell” Paige - Big League Novelty Company

There were at least two manufacturers of these picture packs. The Cleveland Indians picture packs that are considered team issued ran at least from 1947 to 1963 in a format that was similar over the years, with most or possibly all of those sets available in complete set form with accompanying envelope. This would include the 1948 set where Satchel Paige (Satchell) is included in portrait form. The 1949 set included a Satchel Paige (Satchell) in a pitching pose.

Separate from these, another company known as The Big League Novelty Company published picture packs which included the Cleveland Indians, possibly the Pittsburgh Pirates, All Star packs, and a few other teams. In one of those Cleveland Indians sets, there is a Satchel Paige (“Satchell”) portrait with name in quotes. I also think this is a 1949 set based on the envelope which depicts Chief Wahoo wearing a crown from their 1948 championship. A set of these with envelope can be seen on worthpoint at the following link:

So, if you are keeping score, there are 3 Satchel Paige picture pack photos as follows:

1948 Team Issue: Satchel Paige, portrait (Satchell)
1949 Team Issue: Satchel Paige, pitching (Satchell)
1949 Big League Novelty Co: Satchel Paige, portrait (“Satchell”)
