Ted ZanidakisSept 1951 at Ebbets Field....SRO crowd of 38,000+.....Giants vs Dodgers.....I was 12 years old then.
Top of the 9th Dodgers up 1-0....Giants have base runners on 2nd and 3rd. Batter hits a single to RF.
Both runners try to score, Furillo rifles a perfect throw to Campy as 2nd runner slides into homeplate.
Ump signals OUT....then waves his arms SAFE. It was BEDLAM in Brooklyn as the fans went crazy.
When the dust settles, the Giants were ahead 2-1....and, went on to win.
In retrospect, this game turned out to be a microcosm of the 1951 National League season, in which
the Dodgers were leading the League by 13 games in August and finally lost it when Bobby Thomson
hit his famous "The Shot Heard 'Round The World!" in the final playoff game......a 3-run homer in the
bottom of the 9th off Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca that won the pennant.
