My maternal Grandfather collected when he was a kid. He was the son of Italian Immigrants in New York, was obsessed with Tony Lazzeri and later Joe D. I don't know what his collection entailed, I would imagine it included a lot of Yankees, he went into the service during WWII and his mother got rid of them.
Similar story with my paternal Grandfather. He was more of a comic book guy though. Kept all his stuff in a drawer, went off to Korea, his mother threw them away. He told me his favorite comic she got rid of was the one with Batman's first appearance aka Detective Comics No. 27, which just went for a cool Million.
Safe to say, I wish I had a time machine.
