I would say it is Civil War era based on others I have seen. Whether it is CSA or USA, I am not that well versed. If it would have had a back it certainly would have been easier to nail down.

That being said, pretty sure it is period for sure. Hollow backs are not uncommon either. They would crimp a back and a front together with a piece of cotton or such in the middle of them.

I found a NY State Excelsior button in Virginia that fell apart when I released it from the ground and it had cotton batting in it.

Maybe wonder back in that area to see if the back is somewhere near by. I would certainly run a metal detector over that ground. There may be more relics there just waiting for you to find!
