Default 1880’s mounted cards inquiry

I’ve got six mounted photo cards (circa 1887) depicting lesser known fighters of the day, but whose studio pictures were taken by famed baseball photographer John Wood of New York. These aren’t Newsboy or Old Judge cabinets, but they are of a like size. Nor is the name of the fighter identified on the face of the mount. So, without an embossed ID and a blank back, what purpose did the cards serve? I do want to part with them, but before learning more.
